About

Cantrell Funeral Home has a long history in Kimball and a reputation for quality, sincerity and trust. We treat people from all walks of life like they are members of our very own family—because in many ways they are. Kimball is the kind of place where everyone knows your name, and we care deeply about our friends and neighbors.

Service steeped in community

Providing funerals, cremations and personalized memorials in Kimball for well over a century, Cantrell Funeral Home is an important part of the community. We are, in fact, the only funeral home in the area, and we have touched generations of families with compassionate care.

We design services that celebrate the individuality of a person and the uniqueness of his or her life. From a traditional funeral with a viewing beforehand and a reception at a nearby church after, to a celebration of life with live music, favorite foods and a send-off that reflects a great passion, we design services like no other. We believe that honoring your special person’s life is an act of love—and we are here to do that with you.

A comfortable Kimball funeral home

Chapel at Cantrell Funeral HomeBuilt in 1966, the South Walnut Street funeral home is a single-story mid-century building with exposed brick in the lobby and a traditional-style chapel that seats about 135. The chapel has a cozy feeling and modern audiovisual capabilities. We can play favorite music, a slideshow of cherished photos, home videos or a multimedia tribute—which we can help you create. In addition, the funeral home is handicap-accessible, so people with physical challenges feel comfortable here, too.

Private crematory access

Cremation is an increasingly common choice, but not everyone knows that there are many cremation options. From a cremation without a funeral service to a cremation with a memorial that follows, we help you understand the variety of arrangements that are possible. Cantrell Funeral Home does not have a crematory on-site. Instead we use the private crematory at Dugan-Kramer Funeral home in Scottsbluff. Like Cantrell Funeral Home, Dugan-Kramer is a member of the Dignity Memorial network, which means your loved one never leaves our care.

People who truly care

The experienced team at Cantrell Funeral Home emphasizes a can-do attitude. We go out of our way to meet families’ requests. No wish is too big or small. We find it infinitely rewarding to guide families through the process of honoring their loved ones, and we are always here for you, whether you are planning a funeral ahead of time or need immediate assistance. Call us when you need us, day or night.

Our history

Cantrell Funeral Home dates back to 1886. In its early years, the funeral home occupied several locations in Kimball.

In 1948, H.C. Craig purchased the business; Gordon Wisda was resident manager.

On July 13, 1949, S. Gilbert Allen became the licensed manager, assisted by his wife, Betty, who was also a licensed funeral director. They bought the business in 1958. In 1966, they built a new building on South Walnut Street, which still serves as our location today.

On May 25, 1986, after 39 years of service, the Allens retired and sold the funeral home to Jim and Kim Cantrell of Calloway, Nebraska.

Cantrell joins a new family of funeral homes

Front exterior at Cantrell Funeral HomeIn November 1998, the Cantrells sold the funeral home to Rick Allnutt of Fort Collins, Colorado. The Allnutt family has been in funeral service in Greeley, Colorado, and along the front range of Colorado since 1886. At the time of the purchase, John Berg was resident manager, and his wife, Carol, worked with him. Keith Jones, a licensed funeral director from Sidney, worked with John part-time from 2000 until 2005.

On February 1, 2005, John retired and Keith and his family moved from Sidney; Keith became manager of the firm and still cares for families to this day.

In 2017, Cantrell Funeral Home joined the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral homes, crematories and cemeteries, providing the kind of service you expect from a locally operated business but an unmatched array of benefits.
